Shawangunk (pronounced "SHON-gum") is a town in southwestern Ulster County. The population was 12,022 at the 2000 census.
Verkeerder Kill Park is a full service park named for the water source that meanders through the property and is of Dutch origin. There are walking trails, ball fields, volleyball pit, basketball court, several playground areas as well as a Class A trout system for fishing. In winter there is sledding, cross country skiing along the marked trails and ice skating rinks.
The tiny hamlet of Wallkill in the Town of Shawangunk is one of the places in the Hudson Valley where residents have a backyard view that hasn't changed in centuries, with rolling hills, lush trees and 18th century barns.
